What Is a Health Informatics Professional...Exactly?
The Health Informatics occupation lies fundamentally within the health professions, it is not simply an extension of a worker's health-related field (i.e., a physician, nurse, public health professional, or allied
health professional with information technology savvy). Neither are those who work in the health informatics practitioner occupation simply IT professionals or managers who apply IT skills to health or healthcare settings.
Most individuals in the Health Informatics occupation are healthcare and public health workers. Many health informatics jobs may require healthcare licensure, specific knowledge of healthcare and
public health operations, direct care or clinical processes. Health Informatics Practitioners promote the effective use of data, information, and knowledge to
support the safe and effective delivery of healthcare and improve health and wellness.
Practitioners apply a unique set of disciplinary knowledge of healthcare, technical skills and IT

Health Informatics Specialists hold certificates, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees. Each individual should understand his long term career goals and research the curriculum at each program level to determine the right pathway. For nursing professionals, there are specifically nursing informatics programs. Education in health informatics covers areas such as the core sciences, database management, information security, medical coding and classification, health information systems design and analysis, and health law. For those coming from outside the healthcare field, health informatics courses can also include medical terminologies, so that you can confidently converse with clinical staff regarding the medical records you're keeping. Since medical informatics professionals often work in teams or are in management positions, some degree programs offer courses on project management and organizational behavior as well.

Strong Salary Potential and Career Outlook in Health Informatics
Since Health Informatics has not yet received a Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are no government statistics on earning potential for Health Informatics professionals. The nursing profession has had a specialization in nursing informatics for over a decade and is the largest health informatics specialization. The O*NET On-Line system reported 568,000 specialists were employed in 2014 and projected 191,600 job openings between 2014-2024. O"NET reported nursing informatics professionals earned a median salary of $85,800 in 2015.
