Medical Assisting
Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks in medical offices and clinics. In a small practice, they may handle both administrative and clinical duties and report directly to the practitioner, while medical assistants in a large practice tend to specialize in a particular areas and report to department adminstrators.
Administrative duties can include answering phones, maintaining patient medical records, filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admission and lab services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. Clinical duties vary according to state laws. Clinical duties may include taking medical histories, taking vital signs, explaining procedures, and assisting physicians during examinations. They can also include the collection and handling of lab specimens, instructing patients about medications, administering medications and more.
Graduates of medical assistant training programs can pursue careers as medical assistant, nursing assistants, and emergency room technicians.
 Medical Assistant Career Outlook
Employment of Medical Assistants is expected to grow 34% from 2008 to 2018, much faster than average for all occupations. This increased occurs as the health care industry expands because of technological advances in medicine and the growth and aging of the population. Employment growth will be driven by the increase in the number of group practices, clinics, and other health care facilities that need a high proportion of support personnel, particularly the flexible medical assistant who can handle both administrative and clinical duties.
The CMA Certification - The Gold Standard of the Medical Assistant Profession
The CMA (AAMA) is considered the gold standard of medical assisting professionalism. Offered by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the CMA (AAMA) represents a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) who has been credentialed through the AAMA. The CMA (AAMA) means a professional edge, increased prestige among peers and employers, better job security, and greater career advancement opportunities.
Degree vs Diploma?
A degree in Medical Assisting will usually take 2 years to complete, while a diploma or certificate program can be completed in 12-18 months. A degree program can give you the a jump start on the bachelor's degree, if you intend to continue with your education. A diploma/certificate program can get you into the workforce faster. As long as the program is accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP, it will be a quality program. Accredited programs will likely include an externship and prepare students to sit for the CMA exam.
What Will I Learn in a Medical Assistant Program?
First, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED to attend a medical assisting program. Medical assistant programs typically cover anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as typing, transcription, recordkeeping, accounting, and insurance processing. Students learn laboratory techniques, clinical and diagnostic procedures, pharmaceutical principles, the administration of medications, and first aid. They study office practices, patient relations, medical law, and ethics. A quality program will be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES.
Medical Assistant Salary and Career Advancement
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual wages of wage-and-salary medical assistants were $28,300 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $23,700 and $33,050.
Certification can help with future career advancement, as well as lead to higher salary and more employment opportunities. There are various associations -- such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and Association of Medical Technologists (AMT) -- that award certification credentials to medical assistants. The certification process varies by association. It is also possible to become certified in a specialty, such as podiatry, optometry, or ophthalmology.
Medical assistants may also advance to other occupations through experience or additional training. For example, some may go on to teach medical assisting, and others pursue additional education to become nurses or other healthcare workers. Administrative medical assistants may advance to office managers, or qualify for a variety of administrative support occupations.
